As spring racing season gets underway, women across Australia are rushing to get their hands on the ‘must-have’ clothing and accessories of the season.

And while many master their spring style, others miss the mark and end up under-dressed, breaking dress codes or revealing a little more skin than they intended.

So to help make picking a track-side outfit a little easier, celebrity stylist Donny Galella has revealed the top trends of the season, what’s out and his top picks under $300 for those looking for a more budget-friendly look.

SCARVES WORN AS HEADWEAR

Speaking to FEMAIL, Donny said these are perfect tied in bow around a pony tail, worn loosely cascading down the back, worn as a headband or wrapped around your head as a turban.

‘I feel the scarf is back and is such a fun versatile option. The best way to rock this trend is find your dress, shoes and clutch and find a scarf that ties in the colours of your outfit,’ he said.

‘You can find a nice budget scarfs from any department store, usually from around $30.’

The fashion rules of spring racing 2018

* Do not wear a felt hat (they are for Autumn racing). Straw or sinamay based hats are key for Spring.

* Try not to flash too much flesh, you are not going to a nightclub. Most race tracks do have rules and regulations, so do check the racetracks website for these specific details.

* When styling think about your overall look head to toe, often its nice to keep the hair back in a sleek bun or pony, so that the millinery really becomes the focus of your outfit.

BIG HATS ARE BACK

‘I really feel Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, can be thanked for the return of the bigger hat,’ Donny said.

‘She has rocked a few lately and its having an impact on our spring racing trends. I feel we went through the crown and tiara phase and this season, the hat is back.

‘The bigger the brim, the better.’

Donny said some of the top picks are those with ribbon and bow trims or those paired with a scarf.

‘I think its great, its not often you can wear a frock and a big hat, so I am all for the hat making a come back. Milliners Suzy o’Rourke, Ford Millinery, Ann Shoebridge, Sarah C Curtis and Hatmaker by Jonathan Howards are leading the big brim brigade,’ he said.

‘There will also be lots of boater style hats and styles with elegant netting across the eyes.’

ROCK BOLD COLOURS

‘This season we will see both bold vibrant tones like red, purple, yellow/mustard, orange, cobalt blue and lots of pastels especially lilac and pastel millennial pink,’ Donny said.

‘I also expect to see lots of fun prints like animal print, florals and bold checks and vertical stripes.’

SLIP INTO A POWER SUIT

‘Power suits are trending this season, a tailored jacket and pants are a fabulous alternative to a dress,’ Donny said.

‘I also expect to see lots of ruffles, lace, off the shoulder styles and voluminous sleeves – and the 80’s shoulder puff is back.

‘I love the volume sleeve trend, but my tip is always make sure if you are doing volume in your shoulders or sleeves, to make sure you waist is cinched in and fitted.’

DRESS TO THE THEME

‘Derby Day is black and white, Melbourne Cup day is colourful and fun and Oaks Day (also known as Ladies Day) is more feminine so pastels, lace and floaty sleeves,’ Donny said.

TAKE A CLUTCH – DITCH YOUR HANDBAG

‘Clutches are a must, leave the big handbag at home and just carry the essentials (cards, money, ID, keys, phone and lippy),’ Donny said.

‘Clutches this season are fun, bold and are a way to express your personality and style. This season, Olga Berg, Mimco and From St Xavier are all doing incredible clutches.

‘I try to style my clients with a clutch that has a shoulder strap, that way you can rest to clutch on your wrist or shoulder and still be able to hold a glass of Champagne or a form guide.

‘This season, be bold and clash the colour of shoes and clutch with your dress. I do love the colour combo of pastel pink with red.’
