There can always be more time in the day, but a powerful woman like Emily Oberg makes every minute count. The creative director, consultant, and fashion designer tackles everything from working with celebrities to running Sporty & Rich, the annual print magazine she founded in 2016. It’s safe to say her career goes beyond the average nine to five work day.

With a schedule so demanding, Oberg relies on practical style essentials with a purpose that instantly elevate any look and make a statement. She doesn’t waste precious time on average pieces that don’t bring anything interesting or new to her versatile closet. Given her high standards, the classic watch brand G-Shock didn’t waste a single second including her in their new female forward campaign. Titled “24 Hours of Toughness,” the collaboration takes viewers into the lives of extremely accomplished women and showcases how they get through their impressive jobs.

The campaign also introduces the new GMAS140 series, a stylish and modern collection with trendy pops of color that perfectly complements Oberg’s bold and contemporary aesthetic. Plus, as someone who’s always on-the-go, it helps to literally have time by her side. For a deeper dive into the partnership, Oberg spoke with Forbes in an interview below outlining why she decided to work with the watch company along with extended style advice including all the trends to watch out for this coming fall and winter.

Isis Briones: What closet essentials should every working woman have in her closet? 

Emily Oberg: “A timeless vintage handbag and a tailored wool, cashmere coat.”

IB: It’s sad to see summer go, but what style trends are you looking forward to not seeing this fall?

EO: “Massive logos and all over printed logos.”

IB: Onto the opposite, which trends do you think will take off throughout the rest of the year?

EO: “Understated luxury and conscious consumerism. We need to be smarter about our purchasing habits and thoughtful about what it is we are consuming. The world is dying and we all have plenty of things we don’t need. With Sporty & Rich, the philosophy is less but better as Dieter Rams taught us. We should all own less, but better quality things. Invest in timeless pieces that will last multiple lifetimes, rather than fast fashion that you have no strong feelings toward. Our possessions shouldn’t be so disposable to us. They should be meaningful and we should feel strongly about them.” 

IB: Is this how you see the future of fashion and how do you think women will play a part in it?

EO: “I think the future of fashion is more sustainably made products that are timeless. Also, more unisex focused product designed by women for both men and women. So many men want to wear women’s clothes and so many women want to wear men’s but unless something is labelled unisex neither genders feel completely comfortable wearing it. We have to remove these labels and just call them clothes for everyone.”

IB: What does working for such a well-known brand like G-Shock mean to you?

EO: “It’s iconic and has been relevant to me personally since I was 10 years old. They’ve always had “it” watches and the people I looked up to always wore them.”

IB: Apart from brands, who in the fashion industry inspires you?

EO: “Yvon Chouinard from Patagonia. His ideas and his motives were never to make money or become a massive brand. He simply wants to make good, quality products for people that need them and he wants them to keep them forever. They repair worn or damaged clothing, they have multiple programs dedicated to protecting the environment, and their office policies are so forward thinking and more humane than any other company out there. I strive to be as good as them one day.”
