If celebrating Melbourne Cup isn’t on your agenda, Vallance’s chic race day edit covers Derby Day’s black and white codes, Oaks Day’s feminine aesthetic and the relaxed vibe of Stakes Day. Needless to say, if you’re still searching for the perfect outfit, the local label is a great place to start.
To welcome the spring carnival, we chatted to the Australian designer about the trends to try this season, the best way to approach shopping for headwear, and the pieces she always carries in her clutch.
What fashion trends will dominate this spring racing season?
You will see a lot of bold colour at the races this season—the brightest reds, yellows, pinks and blues. You’ll also see women wearing fashion suiting and jumpsuits.
How can women give their look an original edge without it skewing too flashy or over the top?
Wearing a statement dress can give you an edge, along with an eclectic choice in headwear. Contact your favourite milliner and ask them to make you a custom headpiece to go with your statement dress.
Do you have any other advice for approaching headwear?
My advice would be don’t leave your headwear decision until the last second. Purchase your dress first and then decide on the headpiece. You don’t always have to wear a hat; there are so many fun headpieces available now that are a little less serious.
Do you think it’s important to stick to the spring racing dress codes?
There is a nice tradition to racing and it’s important to give a nod to the rules.
Why did you choose to work with Rey Vakili on your spring racing campaign?
First of all I think Rey is stunningly beautiful, however she’s even more beautiful on the inside. Rey has great style, and she is an incredibly warm, intelligent and hard working girl.
What’s your favourite look from the Rebecca Vallance spring racing edit?
There are so many! The yellow Hamptons dress is definitely having its own moment, and the red L’Amour jumpsuit.
If you could dress anyone in the world during the spring carnival, who would it be?
The beautiful royals, Meghan Markle or Kate Middleton. I think they’d both look amazing in Rebecca Vallance.
What is your favourite day on the spring racing calendar?
Derby Day. I love everything about it, from watching the beautiful horses race to having a few fun bets with my husband and drinking champagne with friends from Sydney and Melbourne. I also love seeing women having a great time wearing my clothes—that always makes me happy.
Will you be attending this year?
Yes, I’m doing Derby Day and Melbourne Cup.
What will you be wearing?
Something from my latest resort collection. I have my eye on a dress that I designed exclusively for Net-a-Porter.
What beauty essentials do you always carry in your race-day clutch?
A little make-up revamp never goes amiss, so my absolute must haves are my MAC Velvet Teddy lipstick, mascara, and a powder.
